Wrap-up

Introduction

Hello everyone! I am Ismael Del Moral Oliva, and I am excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. This report summarizes my entire journey contributing to the WordPress Open Source project, specifically the challenges I faced, the tools I mastered, and the skills I acquired as a web development student. I hope my experience inspires others to dive into open-source contributions!

Teams and Projects I Participated In:

Teams: I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team, specifically working with the Spanish (Spain) community (es_ES).

Project Focus: My primary goal was theme localization. I focused on translating complete WordPress themes (Astra, Blogvy, Cryzel and ExS) into Spanish to ensure they are fully accessible and understandable for Spanish-speaking users, adapting technical terms to natural phrasing.

Learning Resources

Guides/Tutorials: To get started, I relied heavily on the Polyglots Handbook in Spanish and the official Polyglots Glossary to maintain consistency.

Mentorship: I received guidance through the WP Spain and making wordpress Slack channels. Watching the community moderators and experienced editors review strings was crucial to understanding the workflow.

Challenges and Solutions

Obstacle 1: Lack of Visual Context. Translating isolated strings in GlotPress can be confusing because you don’t always know where the text appears (e.g., a button, a widget, or a backend menu).

  • Solution: I learned to inspect the theme’s source code and use GlotPress context clues to figure out the exact placement of the variables.

Obstacle 2: Handling Variables. Dealing with placeholders (like %s or %1$d) inside strings was intimidating at first.

  • Solution: I consulted the Polyglots Handbook guidelines on variables and asked for feedback in the Slack community to ensure I wasn’t breaking any code structure.

My Contributions

Here are my main contributions to the Polyglots team. As my official WordPress.org profile shows, I became a recognized Translation Contributor for four different projects:

Astra Theme:

Blogvy Theme:

Cryzel Theme:

ExS Theme:

New Skills Acquired

Through this project, I gained a solid set of skills:

  • Hard Skills: Mastery of the GlotPress localization platform, advanced layout design using native WordPress blocks, and a deeper technical understanding of WordPress theme architecture.
  • Soft Skills: Asynchronous communication, independent technical problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to new collaboration tools outside of my comfort zone.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

Experience: Contributing to WordPress has been a highly rewarding experience. Coming from my Web Application Development studies, what surprised me the most is how welcoming and well-organized the community is for newcomers. It is amazing to see my name in the official contributor tables.

Future Goals: Moving forward, my plan is to keep mastering the block editor for my future development projects. I also intend to occasionally return to GlotPress to review strings and continue helping the Polyglots team make WordPress more accessible.
